Will You Add? - Heirloom Antiques for the Comfort of Being Home
Too often in my many years toiling in the Corporate world I had to sit through poorly facilitated meetings that started late, ended late and had no clear stated purpose. Starting my career in the early 1980's, as a Professional Purchasing Agent, I was fortunate to have been trained in Kepnor-Tregoe methodologies at a time when the organization I was working for was investigating 'Consensus Decision Making'. I won't spend any time in this blog post speaking about consensus decision making except to say it does not work. Someone ultimately needs to make a decision or you will create an over budget camel when a cost efficient horse was the true objective. However, I was trained in problem solving and decision making systems as well as on being a meeting facilitator.
Not many businesses can expect to create a perennial brand like Coca-Cola, but they can learn from Coca-Cola to try to create a rock-solid, lasting, recognizable brand. Why do some brands last for decades and continue to be strong? First, they must build credibility, recognition, track record, reliability, consistency, and they must be memorable. Heirloom pieces and antiques allow you to add some character to your home. Whether you have a piece that has been handed down through your family or you purchase an antique that was in someone elses family, the presence of quality, well crafted art and furniture or textiles removes any hint of a sterile environment, adds a sense of history and a feeling of warmth to your home. Incorporating these pieces into your decorating style provides a sense of grounding and connection to something greater than ourselves, the people in the past;whether it is your grandparents or family or the artist or crafts person who made the item.
Interestingly, as life expectancies have increased and the middle class emerged it is less common for heirloom pieces to stay within the same family. When pieces stay within the family there is a real sense of connectedness to the prior owners (great grandparents or other relations) and often times it is these pieces that remain the most coveted, protected and have the highest sentimental value. With the sale and trade of family pieces the provenance is also often lost. When these items are for sale they are often high quality or more attractive and coveted to have survived so long.
