But typically, antiques and vintage pieces will moToo often in my many years toiling in the Corporate world I had to sit through poorly facilitated meetings that started late, ended late and had no clear stated purpose. Starting my career in the early 1980's, as a Professional Purchasing Agent, I was fortunate to have been trained in Kepnor-Tregoe methodologies at a time when the organization I was working for was investigating 'Consensus Decision Making'. I won't spend any time in this blog post speaking about consensus decision making except to say it does not work. Someone ultimately needs to make a decision or you will create an over budget camel when a cost efficient horse was the true objective. However, I was trained in problem solving and decision making systems as well as on being a meeting facilitator. How to Create a Perennial Brand When you purchase a hand made or antique item today you are buying character and quality that adds to the beauty, comfort and gives you the feeling of being grounded, provides a conversation starter, and sense of being home. Not many businesses can expect to create a perennial brand like Coca-Cola, but they can learn from Coca-Cola to try to create a rock-solid, lasting, recognizable brand. Why do some brands last for decades and continue to be strong? First, they must build credibility, recognition, track record, reliability, consistency, and they must be memorable. The longer the brand survives, the more entrenched it becomes in our culture. As stated, one of the most important ways to create a long-lasting brand is to be consistent. Do not change your strategy, your advertising, or your product and still expect brand power. Your original brand was built on an original reputation. Do not change that. Stay true to your brand, but don’t let it become boring. You want your b Heirloom pieces and antiques allow you to add some character to your home. Whether you have a piece that has been handed down through your family or you purchase an antique that was in someone elses family, the presence of quality, well crafted art and furniture or textiles removes any hint of a sterile environment, adds a sense of history and a feeling of warmth to your home. Incorporating these pieces into your decorating style provides a sense of grounding and connection to something greater than ourselves, the people in the past;whether it is your grandparents or family or the artist or crafts person who made the item. Interestingly, as life expectancies have increased and the middle class emerged it is less common for heirloom pieces to stay within the same family. When pieces stay within the family there is a real sense of connectedness to the prior owners (great grandparents or other relations) and often times it is these pieces that remain the most coveted, protected and have the highest sentimental value. With the sale and trade of family pieces the provenance is also often lost. When these items are for sale they are often high quality or more attractive and coveted to have survived so long. Incorporating these pieces into your decorating style provides a sense of grounding and connection to something greater than ourselves, the people in the past;whether it is your grandparents or family or the artist or crafts person who made the item. Many of you will remember the line from the movie Field of Dreams, "If you build it, they will come." Many businesses apply this methodology to their business model. I can't tell you how many times I've come across this misnomer in dealing with hosting and web design customers. They figure, "I've got a website now. The customers will start to buy my stuff. I can wait for the orders to start coming in." A few months later they call to complain that it isn't working and it must be something wrong. When I ask them what they have done to get customers, a lot of times they don't know what to say because they never thought of that approach. If we pause to think about the build and wait approach for a moment, we will soon see the error in this idea. They have various models, from low end to very expensive models. The stitching quality of a particular machine depends on the features such as the needles, thread, tension, sewing technique and the operator. Many seamstresses prefer a simple sewing machine, with a zigzag stitch and a buttonhole attachment. Generally, most seamstresses make use of straight, zigzag and blind hemstitches. An eighteen- stitch or computerized sewing machine is really not needed for the normal stitching requirements. However, it is seen that some of the older versions of machines cannot handle many of the new fabrics and materials. When the buyer goes in for a sewing machine, the person should at least have a b Interestingly, as life expectancies have increased and the middle class emerged it is less common for heirloom pieces to stay within the same family. The conflict meter starts running. This is often not fully appreciated by parties to a dispute – especially in the early stages when monetary consequences seem the only concern. However as the conflict takes hold, all four costs b Buyer Beware: A Few Things to Look Out for When Buying a New Small Business is also often lost. But typically, antiques and vintage pieces will most assuredly retain their value and continue to increase in value when cared for as they continue to age.Buying an existing small business is a gamble – but well worth it if you take the necessary steps to make sure the business is solvent, in good standing with the public and that you won’t be taking on more than you bargained for (such as debt or damaged/outdated inventory). You can’t be certain of its success, but there are some steps you can take to help uncover any pitfalls a business for sale might have. Here are some things to check into before you make your final decision.Locate your competitionWhen searching for an existing business to buy, do your homework! When you bequest your favorite pieces to your family members, they will have a long lasting reminder of you that transfers into a deeper sense of belonging in their own home. This translates to families who move across states or abroad; to children who move into his/her first apartment; to the cottage or lake house where you share your fondest memories. It plays into a deep-seated sense of belonging and family because of your generosity. If you find a vintage or antique item that you like and purchase it, then later sell it or bequeath it to your heirs now you have left a legacy that becomes part of your history and theirs. Some things that are older are not always given the same value by a new owner as it was by the one who gave it to you and you may wonder: Just because it is old, is it always special? The answer is typically: Yes it is probably special to someone even if you don't understand it. Some family pieces get separated from their original families and can quickly lose their provenance. However, it is likely that if the item was cared for and well loved, just because you can't trace the hi
