Will You Add? - Other Forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution
I started in the search business in 1972 (GASP!) and it didn’t take long for me to notice a few simple, yet understandable behaviors among employers.They include:The longer someone is looking for work, the few choices they have. Companies start to look at your resume and believe that others have interviewed you and found your skills lacking so why should they waste their time meeting you?The longer that someone is out of work, the less negotiating leverage someone has come salary negotiations. Firms often adopt the attitude of giving you two choices when they make an offer—Take it. Leave it. Medical billing is hard enough with it having to be cryptic besides. Unfortunately, there is nothing more cryptic than DX, or diagnosis code tables when it comes to DME billing. In this installment, we're going to try to make some sense of DX tables and give you some basic information that you'll need to know in order to understand how to use them when submitting a bill using your DME software.DX tables, or diagnosis code tables, are tables of data that pertains to a diagnosis of a patient's illness. This has nothing to do with the type of equipment they are getting or their insurance or anything else. It is simply a designation of what it is that the patient is suffering from. Now, this might sound pretty basic, but the problem is that there are more diagnosis codes than New York City has people. As a matter of fact, diagnosis code tables are so massive that updating them regularly is a big business in the medical billing industry. But that's a topic for another article.The table is actually very small. It contains just two items. The first is the actual code itself. The second item is the description that goes with the code. These can be listed in the table in one of two ways depending on how your software works. The first is avoidance, which is a consciously chosen strategy in response to a perceived conflict. This strategy may be called: “Get out of Dodge City.” There is nothing wrong with getting out of Dodge City, in the face of a stronger opponent, a prize not worth fighting for, fear of worse, or any other number of motivations. People routinely, and often sensibly, respond to provocation by just ignoring it.
At the other end of the scale of extra-judicial processes, is self-help. Self-help is an action taken by a person designed to affect a resolution of a problem. Self-help includes murder, though not all forms of self-help are illegal. Now I want to share with you an approach to day trading or swing trading that I had some success with back in the wild and woolly, pinnacle days of day trading that may still work today. The business section of the March 20th issue of the Arizona Republic had a front page article titled "Families Passing Business Torch". My practice often involves working with families on the subject and I found the article very timely, particularly since studies tell us that during the next several years 30 to 40 percent of both family, as well as non-family owned businesses will "attempt" to transfer ownership. I say "attempt" because 2 in 3 family businesses fail after transition to the second generation. As business owners approach retirement age, they are dealing with several complex questions and conflicting goals.The business owner wants to monetize his equity in his corporation, and in many cases there is a desire to maintain family ownership of the business.
