In addition to my 9-5 career, I have chosen to try and build my “residual income” by owning a web-based business.Do you often wonder why some companies get business without actually doing sales? This happens quite often when the company name is known. If you are looking to buy a special coffee and you have heard about a company such as "Starbucks", the name is familiar and you may go there instead of Joe's Place. It is not because they have a superior product, it is because you recognize the name and know they will serve what you want. This is a form of branding. We will talk about branding later in the book. What is happening here is that the name makes it easy for you to make a choice and the products a Before setting up my business, I did a Retirees To Benefit From Tax Provision Today I’m going to take a break from my regular article-writing style of offering helpful tips on how to market your online business, attract visitors, and generate targeted traffic. Everyone needs a break from their work once in a while, so I’m going to take a step back, take a breather, give you a sneak peek of my life as an online business-person so far, tell you how I have been juggling this with my regular 9-5 offline career, and how you can do this too if you want to!When Congress extended the sales-tax deduction, retirees who live in states that have no income tax, received a tax-break option this month. Joyfully, a year old expired provision now restored by Congress gives taxpayers the option of deducting either state and local income taxes or state and local sales taxes from their federal returns. That's wonderful news for retirees living in Florida as well as other income-tax-free states like South Dakota, with high percentages of people, 65 and older. It is definitely to the advantage of those residents in other lower-tax-states to look into whic I have been thinking about running a web-business for quite a number of years without doing anything about it. Unlike many people who start an online business, who want to quit their jobs and work for themselves, this was not and is not my motivation. While my career is providing me with financial independence, it is perhaps an internal desire to be even more financially independent and in control of my money, for not only the short term, but for my future as well. When I read financial books to get myself on track, I hear time and again how important it is to have multiple sources of income. When you work at a regular job like I do, it is called “earned income”, but there are many other sources of income. It's a paradox. Technology helps us get in touch--and it prevents us from being in touch. It helps us save time--and makes us waste time. It helps us correspond--and it can prevent us from being understood. As a consultant, I regularly see people struggling to be understood. Interpersonal conflicts are rampant, and listening seems to be a lost art. As people over-depend on technology, these communication challenges become more difficult. In addition to my 9-5 career, I have chosen to try and build my “residual income” by owning a web-based business.I was watching Judge Judy the other afternoon. The litigant was charging her “ex-friend” with fraud. The defendant asked her friend to cash some money orders for her. Apparently, there was a Nigerian model that had some money orders she needed cashed. She couldn’t do it in her own country so she sent out a rash of unsolicited emails hoping someone would come to her aid.If you cashed the money orders for her, you could keep a certain percentage and then wire her the remainder. Naturally the model would only accept U.S. cash.Oddly enough, the money orders were fraudulent. Like most people starting out, I wasn’t completely aware of the time or monetary investment that running an online business would require. Because I have always been a hard and conscientious worker, it has not been difficult for me to put the hours in that are required to set-up and maintain my business – at least 4 hours per day when you also have an offline career. If you think having a home business is going to free up time for you, think again! Maybe in the long run once you’ve figured out what needs to be done, you get into a routine, and perhaps buy some time-saving software and a laptop, things might get easier, but expect to work long and hard in the beginning. My offline career is also my source of business funding. Without it, I personally wouldn’t take the risk. I’ve always thought that an online business would be sort of a “side-career”. In fact, my web-business is becoming just as much a career as my regular 9-5 job, and requires just as much consisten
