Later in the week we were introduced to word associations, a method Dale Carnegie perfected for jogging one’s memory. An example was to assign a number to something you want to remember. For example, the number one rhymes with won, w-o-n so if you can imagine a horse race where one horse is way ahead of the field but trips at the finish line and what you are trying to remember spills out of the saddle – hundreds of them. During the same period of time, my wife and I were friends with Cathy and Gerald Cornelius. Gerald worked for Conoco and was managing one of several service stations spread around Tulsa. One evening we were over there and I saw a Life magazine lying on the coffee table and immediately decided to try some of what I had been studying in the Dale Carnegie course. I picked up the magazine and handed it to Gerald and asked him to find something on the pages one through ten and let me question him about them. I was thinking he would fail miserably and I could impress him by being able to remember those ten items when it came my turn. Gerald agreed and we went through the exercise, but to my surprise and disappointment, he was
