It's pretty amazing how much the creatures of habit label really sticks to so many of us, 90 to 95% I am quite sure would be a very realistic number! We go through our lives, getting an education and eventually getting out into the real world, securing our 9 to 5 jobs, working for someone who we hope sees the value of our perceived worth.Year after year, we hopefully assess our position in a financial and professional sense, looking forward to the day when we can retire and eventually enjoy the fruits of our labor! Retirement, simply uttering the word conjures up visions of travel, recreation, little or no worries, and the proverbial good life! What is the amount of financial insulation required these days to experience this sequential event, and can we possibly employ the means necessary to fulfill this requirement? We, as a society, find ways to consume every last dime of income we earn. As our paycheck increases, so does our ability to find ways to spend it, along with a rate of speed that far outpaces that with which it arrives! Hmm, now what do we do about that retirement thing and the discretionary income that we need to ensure it becomes a reality?Welcome to the world of the home based business and the incredible opportunities that a direct marketing business affords us! How else can you work for the most dependable and trusting boss on the planet...YOU!! How else can you have the flexibility to do the things that you have always talked about doing? How else can you make as much money as you want? How else can you also enjoy all of the incredible tax advantages that come from having a business at home? And finally, how else can you establish the financial freedom that we all so desperately seek? What was once frowned upon, talked down about and more often than not laughed at is now mainstream! Free to dre Change Management: Clear, Strong Goals What an exciting feeling you must be having at this time. You have finally made the choice to “chuck it all” and go into business for yourself. You dream of the freedom from your unreasonable boss and the wonderful feeling of writing your own paycheck. It’s a lifelong journey that has to start at the first step – the very beginning.Fed up with the performance of your organisation? Ask and you may find that your organisation is fed up with you as its leader. Provide your organisation with some strong, clear goals and the wherewithal to achieve them and you may find the performance of your organisation improves dramatically.Human beings need to belong. According to Maslow, the need to belong is a basic need just above the needs to be healthy and safe. In an organisation, the need to belong is usually aligned to a team. A team striving for a shared strong goal creates a more powerful sense of belonging. Shared strong goals drive behaviours that fulfil the next need in Maslow's hierarchy, the need for achievement and self esteem.Communicating strong goals and the actions required to achieve them consistently and persistently, allows individuals to develop their own thoughts about what they need to do to achieve the goals. Furthermore, developing strong goals with them gives the increased motivation of the goal being owned by them.Strong goals vary between organisations. However they have some common attributes. They are usually singular. There is no clutter, no subtext, no ambiguity about what the organisation is setting out to achieve. They are usually more audacious than employees would have set for the organisation or for their division of the organisation. They have clear building blocks or short term goals which need to be put in place if they are to be achieved. An important common attribute is that both the long-term, audacious goal and the short term goals are time based. The long-term goal needs to be within a time period of around three to four years. Time frames longer than that tend to leave too much room for everyone in the organisation to feel complacent. So many roles in organisations seem to be vacated and filled on a three year cycle that goals of five years and longer duration tend to be the next incumbent's problem to deliver. The corollary of course, is if the goal can only be It is my goal to take everything all those books say and boil it down to a real action plan that is a simple as it can be. Please be sure you have a good quality product and/or superior service. You are not trying to make a quick buck; you want to have a business that lasts.A recent study by executive search firm Korn-Ferry revealed that 70% of executives plan to make a career related New Year’s resolution. Yet experience shows that more than 80% of them will be significantly off-track before the end of the first quarter. Why? Distraction -- the number one enemy of success. Here are some tips to beat the odds and make your resolutions stick this year: Set Inspiring Long-term Goals. Short-term objectives are fine, but don’t often provide the necessary inspiration to stay the course. Keep in mind this classic quote from Napoleon Hill’s, Think and Grow Rich, "The starting point of all achievement is desire... Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat." Create a Path. Even the best goal-setting system isn’t enough. You need specific action steps to follow. When you create a blueprint for your objectives, you give yourself a path to run on. If you get sidetracked, as you undoubtedly will, it’s simple to pick up and restart where you left off. Link Your Activities to Your Goals. Identify your top priorities in every area of your life: career, family, health, friends etc. Then link all of your activities to your goals. Goal-directed behavior is what enables successful people to achieve their objectives in record time. Stop Multi-Tasking. As management guru Peter Drucker said, “If there is one ‘secret’ of effectiveness, it is concentration.” Focus single-mindedly on one thing at a time. By simply doing this, you can reduce the amount of time you need to complete any task by 50-80 percent. Use Technology Efficiently. Technology is great when it enhances productivity, but it can also become a major distraction. Remember, cell phones, e-mail and the Internet, were designed to be used as tools. Don’t let them become your master. Beware of the “Open Door.” O I also have to assume that you already have some sort of support network in place, trusted friends, professional advisors like accountants and/or lawyers, and a maybe a mentor with excellent opinions. What are the types of things you like to do and what are the types of things that you are good at doing without much help. In the beginning, you will want yourself to be your only employee to maximize your profits until you’ve gained some capital. When thinking about a new business I’ve seen popping up around town lately, a designer that creates interesting bouquets out of fruit rather than flowers, it would be easy to see how this business may have gotten off the ground. I don’t personally know the owner, but the path of his/her business would be easy to follow. This may be something that she/he started creating at home and taking to family events and social gatherings. Others may have encouraged her/him to parley this talent into a money making business. She/He may have decided to do so and started by taking orders online or via the phone.Once her/his business grew, she may have hired someone to help her/him with details like taking orders or general bookkeeping. She/He may have then decided to expand this business to include stores that people can come personally to and place orders or see examples of their work; perhaps they’ve even made some creations of their own to put on display or sell out of their store. My key expertise is online ecommerce, but the following ideas are relevant to starting any type of business. When you have gone through your list for the day, it is time to build the list for the next day. I recommend only one day at a time because of the referrals you will get from your calls during the day. If you would rather plan a week in advance, then you should do so and call the referrals as they come in. Remember doing the calls is only a portion of your day and the remainder of the time will be spent doing the work you have created for yourself and other activities. Through all of your activities, networking, and client interactions, you will be building more names for your call list. You can plan on obtaining additional leads everywhere you go. You never know where the conversation will lead when in another person's office or at a social gathering. It is not that you are after business every waking hour; it is just that you must be aware of business opportunities that you can follow up with during your working hours. You may have some solid business relationships that take you to social outings so you can potentially meet people that you will eventually do business with. I recently went to an event through an alliance partner and I was not really sure if I wanted to go. I was so busy networking and trying to gain business that I almost passed on the opportunity. I finally got ready and went to the event. At this event I met two potential customers and agreed to meet with them the following week. You never know where your leads will come from, even if you are too tired, just go and enjoy, you never know what will happen. At a breakfast meeting I had recently, a discussion of closing business became the topic. She felt that sometimes things she though were locked down often fell through. At other times she said that the business comes out of nowhere because she had attended an event or had done her follow-up calls. You just have to make sure you keep calling. How to Establish Your Business This first part is really what most people don’t know how to do. It’s the fundamental process of actually setting up the business. All the good ideas in the world have to start at the beginning. It’s not the fun part, but it has to be done. It may seem elementary to you, but why haven’t you done it yet? So, let’s start from the start. 1) Giving Your Business a Name Your business’ name is important. It is your customers’ first impression and your public identity. You probably want to choose a name that is professional, but also may hold some meaning to you and your potential customers. My personal and professional opinion is to not get too elaborate with your name. Make it simple and direct so you don’t have to waste a lot of time branding or explaining to your customer just what it is you do or sell. For example, for my family’s business selling pashmina products, we decided to go with The Pashmina Store. There is no question what the business is. Simple and direct…and the URL was available (which is very important). Most people have a desire to name their business after themselves, using something like their family name, their first name, or their initials. This is a perfectly acceptable; as long as you get the idea across about what it is you are selling. For example, if you are selling raincoats and your name is Smith, you may call your business Smith’s Raincoats or even Raincoats by Smith. Take the time you need to select on a business name that you’re happy with, says what you do, and has a good URL for a websi
