    Every human being wants and needs to feel important, so it is inevitable that when people work long hours in close environments something will happen that may spark a power struggle. Simple matters can appear to take on a life of their own because of the different personalities involved.Whether you're fighting with a colleague who took credit for your work or you were excluded from a meeting that was important, be strategic in your approach to resolving the issue.Assess the situation. Before you engage in any power plays, evaluate the different ways to resolve the issue and choose the best one. Consider each plan of action and know what you want the outcome to be, and then act.Seek advice. Get counsel from an experienced, well-respected business mentor. Listen attentively and try to see all sides of the issue.Don't take it personally. Business is a game and everyone wants to win. Unfortunately, some people want to win even if it means cheating, backbiting, and engaging in unethical behavior.Be professional and stay calm. Power struggles are a test of your problem-solving and leadership skills. If you lose your composure you've already lost the game.Familiarize yourself with personality types.     If you can work it out, and I know it’s not easy to do, the benefits of working at home are extraordinary.First, if you’re a single parent, like I am, then you are always there for your children when and if they need you.Second, you don’t commute. You save money on gas, wear and tear on your vehicle, cut down on pollution, and the more your vehicle sits in the carport the more you start thinking about reducing costly insurance premiums.But also, there is less wear and tear on you.You’re not frustrated or frightened in traffic.You’re not under pressure because you have to be somewhere at a certain time.That’s not to say there aren’t problems working at home.There are.But, I feel blessed to have this job on many levels.Am I getting rich?No, I’m lucky if I break even each month.But the life style is priceless.I go to work when I’m ready (after I’ve made breakfast and lunches for my daughters and they are off to school) I start clipping, mowing, painting, repairing etc. around the apartments.     I climbed out of my crib very early, and proceeded to live a very hyperactive childhood, so I have been told by parents, aunts, elder cousins, and others who have known me my entire life. I have noticed that whenever these individuals relate this story, their pupils dilate. According to some researchers and body language experts, this means that they either find me attractive as a person, or that I am a source of anxiety. I certainly hope for the former interpretation, as it would be emotionally unhealthy for these individuals to hold a grudge, now that I have reached adulthood.

    Powerful Phone Interviews
    Phone interviews are de rigueur with many organizations.Companies conduct phone interviews for a number of reasons.It’s a way to screen out the dead wood.It gives the next interviewer baseline information from which to work.It saves money.So, how do you prep for a powerful phone interview?And how is it different from a face-to-face interview?Recently, three of my clients aced their phone interviews. Here’s what we learned works.Prepping for the phone interview:If you need to call from work or from a phone booth or a cell phone, tell the screener/interviewer what the circumstances are. It’s better to explain ahead of time than to suddenly have to stop midway through because of noise or an interruption. Stand up. You project stronger energy when you stand. Or even better, walk around. Remember, the interviewer has only your words and the sound of your voice with which to judge you. You will come across more upbeat and enthusiastic if you stand.Even for a phone interview, you need to do your homework. Unfortunately, the shiny coffee percolator I grabbed to pull myself up wasn’t bolted securely to the top of the refrigerator (a parental oversight, given that almost everything else was tied down, cordoned off, or roped shut). That’s the source of one of my earliest “good scars.” As just about everyone knows, an ample collection of these scars serves as a great way to break the conversational ice at social gatherings.
