The issue then is not with reality television itself, but whether reality television is real enough. Away from the TV screen, appearances aren't everything, and outer changes don't necessarily replace inner truths.

If reality television began to live up to its name, it would be giving us insightful programs to demonstrate how real people could give up their limiting beliefs and learn to be more thoughtful, generous, kind, understanding, and even humorous. It might also give us a program that focuses on the inward rather than the outward manifestations. For example, a show that asks with real interests such as: "Can I honestly support the courageous people from addictions that plague them?" "Can this marriage be saved?" "Can there be peace when war is an option?" "Can I tolerate my inconsiderate neighbour?" And so on. I'd much look forward to a reality television that offers a variety of innovative solutions to deep-seated social conflicts that allow viewers to consider them, and vote on the most effective.

Looking inward like questioning or probing our prejudices is more difficult and often terrifying. Ourselves as a society, it is much easier to focus on the external rather than the internal indications. Only time will tell where reality television will lead us.
