    How Would You Handle This Customer Service Issue?
    I was reading in the Winnipeg Free Press (my local paper) about a woman who was a passenger in a Unicity taxi cab. The woman had pre-paid her fare to the tune of $25.00. Nine dollars into the cab ride, the cab got into an accident.The woman was injured and unable to complete her trip. She asked for a refund of at least $16.00. The balance left on her pre-payment.You would think the cab company would bend over backwards to accommodate the woman, but no; they refused to give her a refund. This kind of customer service attitude is REALLY DUMB on the part of Unicity and it’s bad for business. Their refusal will cost them a lot more than $16.00.First the story made the Free Press so thousands of people are going to read about the incident and Unicity Taxi will get a lot of bad publicity and lose business.Secondly I’m writing about it to the 1500 subscribers to my Newsletters. And I’m going to post it at my web site. More bad publicity and some people will definitely talk about it to friends, family members and co-workers.All this bad publicity and lost business to save $16.00. Talk about short sightedness. This reminds me of one of my grandmother’s favourite saying “don’t be penny wise and a pound foolish”.This kind of customer service attitude is a result of management not looking at the “life-time value” of their customers. If Unicity did the math they would clearly see the error of their ways.If that passenger uses Unicity 5 times a year for an average fare of $25.00, that’s $125

      If you are considering a car wash fundraiser for your nonprofit soccer team, baseball team, cheerleading squad, high school band or church youth group then you need to plan ahead and consider the possibility that you will be rained out. Everyone wants to do a car wash fundraiser on a sunny Saturday and when you have perfect weather you can make quite a bit of money as everyone also wants to get their car washed.It is important to give rain checks or have a rain date especially if you sell presale tickets in advance, because once the customers purchase the tickets if it rains they will be upset. But if there is a rain date on the ticket they will not ask for their money back and they will be quite happy to know they can come at a later time. If it rains twice they will call it a wash.Additionally, nonprofit groups and the committees that set up car wash fundraisers often have a very hard time picking a date in the first place and if he gets rained out you may not be able to make your budget for the year.     When I graduated from college and landed my first job within a month, I was understandably thrilled. This was my dream job, at a company I was familiar with that offered plenty of opportunity for growth and success for an ambitious sales associate.

    I was more than ambitious. I worked 12 hour days routinely, hoarded my vacation time and sick days. I operated on a life philosophy that required plenty of hard work initially, with the assumption that when I was ready for marriage, family, home, etc. it would all come automatically. My nuclear family is small and distant, so I could pretty much devote my time to work without conflict.

    Then I met a girl, became engaged. Suddenly I realized that my fianc? might not appreciate my twelve-hour days and absent weekends. She'd been accommodating so far, but how long would it last? She was a career person, but worked a strict 9 to 5 with very occasional overtime. One day, she asked if my hectic schedule would continue after we were married. I could tell from her tone of voice that it wouldn't.

    The first to go was the weekend work. I lost a few accounts and the commissions attached. No problem. My new wife made a good salary so it didn't matter much. When I let go of 3 evenings per week, eyebrows around the office began to raise. My salary slipped from stellar to ordinary, and my boss was ready to transfer some of my best accounts to employees who were willing to work my former schedule.

    My wife suggested I find a new company. I was reluctant at first, but we had the future - buying a home, paying for kids and college, preparing for retirement, to think of. So I searched. Within the year I found a new position with a more family oriented company. The commission structure requires only minimal overtime, and there are options like flex time, childcare savings accounts, retirement programs, and other benefits available. We are planning to start a family next year.

    I discovered that the balance of career/personal life is important, and I need to work for the kind of company that supports my lifestyle so that I'm able to maintain that balance. The change was tough, but it was well worth the effort.

      When was the last time you received a handwritten note from a business associate? It may be that it was too long ago for you to remember. On the other hand, if you have gotten one lately, you know exactly who sent it and when. Handwritten notes have become almost extinct in the business world. So if you are looking for ways to stand from the crowd, to be noticed by your colleagues and clients, try putting pen to paper whenever you have the slightest excuse.There are few acts more impressive than handwriting a letter or a note to someone with whom you do business or would like to. Most people think that writing notes by hand requires extra time and effort. Ironically, it can be quick and painless if you do it frequently and follow these tips:1. Have writing supplies close at hand. Store stationery and stamps in the most convenient place in your desk.       I always enjoy hearing about the success stories of people working from home, those who have started their own business and turned it into a money earning successThere are publications and even television programmes dedicated to peoples success in running their chosen business, a business that they enjoy being involved with and are normally shown earning plenty of extra money because of it.However, every now and again, one hears of the downside of trying to run a business, I had an experience of this just before Christmas last year when a subscriber to my newsletter sent me a letter which asked to be taken off of my list and could he possibly have a refund for unsent copies.
