This Mark Victor Hansen’s story: PART II Mark was able to finance his both undergraduate and graduate education at Southern Illinois University majoring in philosophy and communications from the money he earned playing in his band he started while he was still in high school. He also became a research assistant to Professor Buckminster Fuller. The late Dr. “Bucky” Fuller was the owner of 2,000 major patents and the author of more than 40 national bestsellers, including Utopia and Oblivion. Mark Victor Hansen said, “He was my intellectual mentor. He [Bucky] taught me to think comprehensively and in anticipation of the future. I learned that if you anticipate problems, you could help solve them. That’s what I wanted to do for humanity.”

One of Dr. Buckminster Fuller’s famous inventions, what some called one of his signature inventions, was the geodesic dome. The commercial building of geodesic domes became the focus of Mark Victor Hansen’s first business venture as an adult. Mark shared his vision about helping to house the world, “I thought I would house humanity with those,” Mark continued to demonstrate his selling skills by selling the domes. He was initially successful and in less than three years Mark’s venture had annual sales of $2 million in the early 1970’s.

Mark Victor Hansen, never saw the coming of the OPEC oil embargo of 1974. Mark’s geodesic domes used polyvinyl chloride, more commonly know as “PVC.” PVC is a petrochemical based product which was now suddenly scarce and it was not available to Mark’s new small PVC geodesic dome operation
