When I reflect back upon the most satisfying times of my life, I conclude that they were the days when I had a definite sense of purposeful routine.

As an example, when I first learned the Joy of Routine, it was in the 11th grade. After six hours of sleep, I would get up early for spiritual pursuits before school, and I did this every single day. This ensured that some of the most important things were happening first, and it made a real difference.

After school, I had track practice, which would really wear me out, but which gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. After track, I would go home and eat a TON of food, then nap for an hour. This nap seemed to rejuvenate me and give me the catch-up sleep needed.

Next, I would lift weights in my room while listening to the radio. The muscle training helped me to feel good about myself, because I was in shape and toned. After this, homework was next.

I would then end each day with reading various self-improvement books. This would fill my head with positive notions that raised me a little higher than the usual level at which we operate our minds. It made me dream of greater things and I loved it.

Then...I would do the same thing over and over every single day.

Consider this quotation from Charles Dickens in "A Tale of Two Cities":

"It may be the character of his mind, to be always in singular need of occupation. That may be, in part, natural to it; in part, the result of affliction. The less it was occupied with healthy things, the more it would be in danger of turning in the unhealthy direction. He may have observed himself, and made the discovery."

There is power in a constant, consistent, focused striving towards a few goals. My affirmation to you now is: "Set up a Daily Routine!"
