Recently, I was asked to serve on jury duty. In my hometown, the process is very simple: for two weeks I called in the night before to see if my panel was expected to show up the next day. Basically, I had no idea if I was selected for jury duty until 6 pm the night before. Needless to say, it was very difficult to plan anything - childcare, work appointments, or even a trip to the park - for those two weeks. I have to admit, I became really frustrated with this infraction on my personal "need" to plan. However, all that changed when our judge recognized our sacrifice, but also reminded us of the sacrifice of those serving in Iraq and other parts of the world. I don’t know about the other jury members, but I sure felt like a selfish whiner! It is amazing what the difference a healthy perspective makes.

Furthermore, I began to think about how easily I take each day for granted. I caught myself planning for the future with such fervor, meanwhile not even taking notice of the present day. Curiously, I looked up “Days” in a Biblical concordance. With over 350 references, here are a few of my favorites that revealed to me the significance of just one day.

1. Life is short, but God’s faithful love is forever

Psalm 103:15-18: As for man, his days are like grass — he blooms like a flower of the field; when the wind passes over it, it vanishes, and its place is no longer known. But from eternity to eternity, the Lord’s faithful love is toward those who fear Him, and His righteousness toward the grandchildren of those who keep His covenant, who remember to observe His instructions.

How often I forget about the eternal love of God. My troubles are never inconvenient to Him. When I took a minute to reflect on this, the frustrations of jury duty seemed to fall away.

God knows everything. Nothing blindsides Him. I can rest knowing He is in control and I do not have to be. I do not have to work everything out.

What a difference a new outlook can have on our circumstances. Regardless of what is going on in my life, I can be comforted that God is fully aware of every detail. Perhaps this is what is meant to live one day at a time.
