But now they must defend their turf to further defend their title. The two teams will meet for an emotional three-game series this weekend, beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday in Fenway Park.
Given everything that the Red Sox went through to claim that 2004 championship (overcoming 86-year curse, greatest comeback in sports history, etc.) it would be anticlimactic if they didn’t make it back to the postseason. For the aging Yankees, making one final run to cap a dynastic decade, it would be an exorcism of sorts and the first step in diminishing Boston’s crowning achievement.
This is the eighth year in a row that these two teams have finished first or second in the AL East, and is the 18th such occurrence in the last century. Even the sports books are uncertain over who is going to come out on top this weekend between the Yanks and Sox. I’ve seen New York (3/1) as slight favorites to win the American League pennant and advance to the World Series. But I’ve also seen Boston as the chalk pick at 2/1. Where we stand right now, neither is even guaranteed a playoff slot!
This matchup is of the best two hitting teams in the Major Leagues. The Red Sox (.281 batting, 5.6 runs per) are No. 1 and the Yankees (.276, 5.5) are No. 2. However, both of these teams have had horrendously inconsistent pitching throughout the year. New York has the 22nd ranked staff in the league, and Boston possesses the worst bullpen (5.42 ERA) in the bigs. In what figures to be a tightly contested series, that bullpen insecurity – compared to the Hammer of God, NY’s Mariano Rivera – could doom the Sox.
Another subplot is that the American League Most Valuable Player award could be decided this weekend as well. Boston’s David “Big Papi” Ortiz and New York’s $25 Million Dollar Man Alex Rodriguez are the two frontrunners. Ortiz (.296 BA, 47 HR, 146, RBI, .600 SLG) has been the most clutch hitter in the game over the last two years, and A-Rod (.320 BA, 47 HR, 129 RBI, .610 SLG) is undoubtedly the best all-around ball player in the Majors.
