Can Finance Really Become a Strategic Partner to the Business? mMuch has been written about how finance organizations can become strategic partners with the businesses they support. While purported experts point to a variety of frameworks, scorecards and key performance indicators, etc. as the keys to bridging the gap between finance and business, these trite 'solutions' have done little to make finance the strategic business partner it seeks to be. Worse yet, pursuing these ideas has put finance organizations on a treadmill where they expend energy and resources (e.g., money and time) ultimately to get nowhere while the issue persists. So if you are still looking for a silver bullet or quick fix to this seemingly incurable problem, stop reading now.Given the time, money and effort spent, you may be a bit demoralized and even speculating that the finance-business chasm cannot be crossed. Paradoxically, the link between finance and the business has been under finance's proverbial nose for some time - resource allocation. A serious concerted effort to optimize an organization's resource allocation ultimately enables finance to develop the bridge between finance and strategy. This discipline known as corporate portfolio management works to actively manage the company's resource allocation as a portfolio of discretionary Readers Speak We received an email from one of our readers/listeners Amy from San Francisco, California and she made a suggestion for Wall Street to Main Street, She said that we should make the NAMC Radio WSMS segment a little more entertaining. Talk about denial. President Bush’s Press secretary Scott McClellan exits stage left as the shakeup continues in the Bush administration. China;s President Hu Jintao had an eventful visit to Washington State, , from endorsing the java house Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) as he sat with Starbucks Chief and visionary Howard Schultz to addressing software piracy with Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) founder Bill Gates, and we should mention that Boeing (NYSE: BA) didn’t do too bad either as China placed yet another order for 15 Boeing 737 aircraft that have a list price of $982.8 million. So for those that doubt that China is working hard to be a global player, open your eyes because more deals will be coming down the pike with various U.S. based companies. Now President Hu’s visit to Washington D.C. to meet with President Bush was not a fireworks celebration visit as was hoped for but that is a work in progress. More importantly for U.S. companies is China’s willingness to do business and that is what investors are concerned about, as long as China continues to keep their door open for more business with U.S. based companies there will be opportunities for investors to capitalize on it. That is compared to earnings of $290 million or 34 cents a share a year earlier. This was attributed to the increased sales of iPods and the increased shipments of Macintosh Computers. About a week ago we evaluated General Motors’ position and came to the conclusion that the company would start to turnaround, granted it would not be a swift move but in the $19 range it would be worth the wait. The reason we see this happening is simple, if you back a dog into a corner it will do one of two things, submit or fight back, and with the line up at General Motors and the influx of foreign cars hitting U.S. streets, you can bet that they will fight with all they have. So this would entail the company taking drastic measures to boost their revenue stream, even if it means cutting the CEO Rick Wagoner loose, which may be a possibility in 2006. Everytime that I show my site to someone and tell them how much money I have made off of it over the years, they always say "You gotta show me how to do this!". Well, I'm tired of wasting my breath on this subject so I'm going to write down everything that's needed and just point people to this article from now on.First off, a little history may be in order. I created my site about seven years ago after a friend told me of someone he knew that was making something like $60k a year from his own website. I checked out the website and saw that it was an affiliate site. An affiliate site is a site where there are special links to online stores and if someone clicks on one of those links and then buys something from that store, the site owner gets paid a percentage of the sale. It seemed easy enough to do and I knew enough about html to do it, so I decided to give it a try.I couldn't afford to risk much in trying to create a new business as I didn't have a lot of money. The only site I had created up until then was just a free site on Geocities, so I didn't really have any knowledge about what it took to set up a "real" website. After doing a little research, I found out that you really didn't need a lot of money to So for those that doubt that China is working hard to be a global player, open your eyes because more deals will be coming down the pike with various U.S. based companies. There are, however, suggestions that can assist you in getting the most out of your company’s brand.Create something original. You may think that everything that is anything has been done before, but that is not true. Possibilities for developing an original brand are endless. Moreover, customers want to see something new and different. In addition, there are serious legal consequences for stealing or borrowing from an existing brand. Make your brand your own.Remember the concept of continuity. The public must be exposed to your brand over a period of time before they begin to form associations in their minds. When they continuously see your image, logo, and company name, they will start to remember and begin to become aware of your brand.Consistency is essential for building a brand. Spend some time during the invention process fine tuning the way you would like for your brand to appear. Seek professional opinions and assistance for the design concepts. When you focus on your wishes early on in the beginning, you can avoid having to make changes later. Stay consistent with your logo and brand.
