Every hero must experience an expansion of consciousness and the oracle's role is to push the hero towards it. This can be a significant or not so significant aspect of the journey, as long as the hero heads towards the expansion of consciousness and the tangible representation of it called the sword).

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth): Period of Indecision
A preliminary stage of the Road of Trials is the Period of Indecision. The crux is that this is a period where the hero's old self dissolves away and the hero in as yet uncertain whether this is the correct path for him. Often, it is the elixir or some reward further down the line that motivates him. In The Godfather (1972), it is the sword that motivates Michael (his bride, the meeting of Appollonia).

Where the hero achieves synergy, loyalty and the conquest of challenges, the opposite is true for the antihero. His fate is deception, loneliness and alienation, In Scarface (1983), Manny begins to deceive Tony (he's seeing Gina); Tony alienates Elvira; both Manny and Elvira leave Tony alone.

The demon king lives in a world of infinite treasure but is constantly pursued (and must avoid) the forces of good. He has gained his kingdom by committing the vilest of acts. The antihero realises that a kingdom such as this is the elixir. But in order to obtain it, he must follow the same path [of committing vile acts]. In Scarface (1983), Tony wants to take over Frank's dope empire.

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. Following resistance to the engagement, the engagement is forced. In Straw Dogs (1971), Tom tries to break in.
